Ferruginous Duck

Aythya nyroca

All its plumage is reddish brown with a white patch on the wings and underparts. The beak and legs are grey. Its white iris is striking, as it stands out above all and makes it visible from far away. The female has a browner plumage. It lives in shallow waters, in lagoons with abundant vegetation and in waterlogged areas, preferably fresh water, and is a fairly trusting bird, although it will dive if it is in danger. It feeds on molluscs and seeds of aquatic plants and deep vegetation. They nest in vegetation very close to the water. They lay 6 to 8 eggs.
