Kentish plover
Charadius alexandrinus
Bird of about 16 cm, with a brown back and black legs, the breast and underparts are white. It feeds on insects, spiders, worms, molluscs and crustaceans. It lives on sandy, stony beaches and in areas close to the coast. It is a gregarious bird, forming large groups. It is often seen scurrying along beaches, with a fast, low flight, which it does not take off until it is heavily invaded. It lays its eggs between April and August, in any small depression, and lays 3 eggs which are incubated by both parents. It is a protected species.
