The bird is 17 cm long and has a wingspan of 25 cm, and usually weighs about 26 g. It is a protected species that lives mainly in the shrub-fringed meadows of the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian coast. It feeds on grain, seeds and insects. It can be seen singing along roadsides. It nests from April to June, with the female laying two or three clutches of 2 to 5 eggs.
